I had a major breakout quite recently, an event I’ve not experienced since high school. I mean it was very scary. Desperate, I used Murad’s Exfoliating Acne Treatment Gel, since they’re such a reputable brand in skincare. But the bad looking skin was yet to come.
Let me get right to the point. The gel has quite an intense burning sensation and even my normally hard-as-nails skin started itching & stinging. Many Murad acolytes claim using it repeatedly eliminates the itching sensation, but I’ve done it and no.No, it doesn't.Each and every time, it has irritated my skin so badly that I had a compulsive need to remove it straight after application. Of course, being as loyal and hardworking for you guys as I am, I didn’t – I had research to do. Gel piled on giant zits, I spent 2 itchy, frustrating nights letting this stuff work its magic, carefully avoiding touching my skin for fear of transferring oil or rubbing this stuff off.
So what did happen? Actually, my existing blemishes got worse. I have no idea how Murad’s R&D decided that a high-concentration combination of retinol, salicylic and glycolic acids were a good idea for everyone’s skin. It might do a better job on teenagers trying every alternative to Accutane, but honestly, I kind of doubt it. Those kids’ skin is wartorn as it is, and the top layer might explode if this stuff touched it. I took every possible precaution: I only used it once in a week, didn’t use a large amount, tried it in the morning, tried it at night, skipped toner, and didn’t touch my face at all while it was on there. What else could I do?
I’m disappointed, Murad! I’m not listening to any more promises of “wait and see and go and try it this way”; the fact is, I’ve tried a thousand products with salicylic acid in them, and none of the others made me want to peel my own face off in agony.

This three-part acne system was created by Dr. Howard Murad, who is a leading researcher in skincare. The three parts of this product are the Clarifying Cleanser, the Exfoliating Treatment Gel, and the Skin Perfecting Lotion. This process needs to be done twice a day, morning, and evening. On Murad’s company web site, they claim that their success rate is 90% within four weeks. However, we didn’t find any results from their “clinical study” that can back up this claim.
Murad Acne Complex Ingredients
The main ingredient in the Murad cleanser is Salicylic Acid. This is one of the best acne-fighting ingredients found today. It wipes away the dead skin cells as well as other clogging substances that cause acne. It also encourages re-growth of healthy skin cells. However, most research concludes that a concentration of at least 2% should be used. Murad only uses 1.5% concentration.
The Exfoliating Treatment gel inside of the Murad Acne Complex contains more Salicylic acid in a lower concentration as well as Retinol and Glycolic Acid. The Retinol is designed to help reduce and control oil production in the skin. However, it is not usually proven as effective as Silicol Dioxide. Glycolic Acid can also cause some negative reactions to this exfoliant. However, the concentration of Glycolic acid is so low in this product that it would probably be ineffective.
The Perfecting Lotion includes more Retinol and a variety of botanicals, such as Queen of Meadow and Arnica. These ingredients are intended to soothe the skin irritation caused by acne and improve the complexion. Queen of Meadow supposedly tightens the pores and minimizes oil production. However, there is no scientific research evident to back this up.
How To Use It
Clarifying Cleanser: Massage small amount over dampened face and neck. Rinse with quite warm water and pat dry.
Exfoliating Acne Treatment Gel: Cleanse the skin thoroughly before applying the gel. Cover the entire affected area with a thin layer one to three times daily.
Acne Spot Treatment: Cleanse skin and apply a thin layer on affected areas 1 to 3 times daily or as required.
Skin Perfecting Lotion: Every day after cleansing and toning, massage evenly over face and neck. For optimal results, follow with Murad sunblock during the day.
